Mexico has an excellent bus service running to every town no matter how
small or far away. Every town has a bus terminal and tickets prices
are extremely reasonable.
Public
buses in Cancun run between the Hotel Zone and downtown from 6 AM
until midnight and cost about 5 pesos. Taking the bus can save you
a considerable amount of money on taxis and are great for meeting
the locals. There are designated bus stops but you can also flag
down drivers and if they can stop safely they will. Buses from the
Hotel Zone do not go into downtown but will drop you off at Avenida
Tulum, where you can catch a connection downtown. Look for buses
that say “El Centro” for downtown buses. Route 8 public buses go
to Puerto Juárez and Punta Sam. Buses will be crowded during rush
hour from 7 to 9 AM, 1 to 3 PM and from 7 to 9 PM.
The downtown
bus terminal is located on Avs. Tulum and Uxmal. First class and
second class buses to all the major cities and ruins (Valladolid,
Mérida, Chichén Itzá, Tulum, Cobá) leave every few hours. Buses
to Puerto Morelos, Playa del Carmen, and Xcaret leave every 20 minutes.
